Statewide nonprofit Children’s Cancer Connection (CCC) has received a grant from Variety - the Children’s Charity to help fund an inclusive playground at CCC’s Jeff and Deb Hansen Home for Hope.

Children’s Cancer Connection is a nonprofit which serves nearly 750 families throughout Iowa who are affected by childhood cancer. CCC provides opportunities that encourage relationships and strengthen community.

The Variety grant will be used to build an inclusive playground at CCC’s Johnston building, bringing an outdoor play opportunity on-site for CCC children as well as members of the public. Program attendees at CCC’s Kids Club, Day Camps, Teen Hangouts and other events will be able to play while connecting with friends on similar childhood cancer journeys without needing to walk or be transported off-site. The playground will feature an accessible Merry-Go-All, multi-user arch swing, music panels, overhead climber and ADA-friendly rubber surfacing.

“Children’s Cancer Connection moved to our current location in December 2021 with a goal of providing program space that’s fully inclusive, including to visitors with mobility or sensory challenges,” said CCC CEO Jennifer Hines. “Thanks to Variety - the Children’s Charity’s lead gift, we are able to add an incredible outdoor recreation area, which will provide even more opportunities for those affected by childhood cancer to connect and have some fun.”

Children’s Cancer Connection hopes to complete the inclusive playground in summer 2023.
